Rags is a backyard hen, whom Hen Harbor took in when her egg-laying dropped off. She lived with a nice family before coming to the sanctuary, but this did not protect her from the deadly ailments inherent to all hens who are bred for excessive laying.

Much like factory-farmed hens, even the "heritage" breeds of hens bought from the feed store are genetically programmed to lay too many eggs. This means their reproductive tracts blow out after just a few years.

This is exactly what has happened with Rags. As you can see from the video, she feels extremely ill. An exam revealed a severely impacted oviduct -- full of hardened, unshelled eggs that she cannot pass. This egg material is rotting, and she likely is full of necrotic tissue.

The condition is extremely painful and can only be fixed with surgery. Without it, she will die. With surgery, she can go on to live many more years with her friends, bug hunting, lettuce munching, and doing all the other things that hens were born to do.

We have an extremely kind vet who will give us a non-profit discount, meaning her surgery will be around $500 (instead of the normal $800)

Because we take in so many aging, "spent" hens, Hen Harbor's vet bills average $2,000/month, and right now the coffers are empty.

Lucky for you, the holidays are right around the corner! You can shop among our perks list and knock out some holiday shopping, get a sweet tax write-off, and help give the gift of life to a sweet hen named Rags!
