Guerilla Mathematics is a volunteer tuition programme that provides free and excellent support in maths for students and adults returning to education from marginal communities in Dublin. Ballymun is a large area of the city of Dublin that has long been associated with a variety of social and economic problems, and the area – like many others in the city – is underrepresented in third level education. We know that education offers people better choices and a better chance in life. What stands in the way for many, once other obstacles have been overcome, is the requirement of a mathematics qualification for matriculation in all Irish colleges and universities. For over four years Guerilla Mathematics’ volunteers have been giving tuition and support to students who are working very hard to make the most of their educational opportunities.

We need funds to continue the work that we do, and to keep students with our programme. Our entire programme is volunteer run, so organisation and labour are entirely cost free. We work within the local library network and within other community organisations, so space is – for the most part – free. Materials cost! To keep the programme going, and to keep many students with us, we need materials like scientific calculators, log books, past papers etc. As little as €15 makes sure that a student’s needs are covered. A little bit can, and will, go a very long way.
