When I met Laura Hurse she was a student at UMKC studying pre-law. One thing you learn very quickly is that this young woman has drive and a work ethic that does not quit. Her intention in coming to work out at 24 Hour Fitness was and is to develop skills necessary for her to live independently.

Laura has been a personal training client of mine for almost three years now. She was born with a spastic form of cerebral palsy. She has never walked and has been in a wheelchair for most of her life. She is 29 years old.

We have been working on developing Laura's upper body strength which will allow her to pull herself up from laying on her back to a seated position in bed or, even better, give her the ability to "transfer" to a standing position so that she might eventually use a walker or canes to walk with. At the same time working on strengthening her legs to prepare for increased mobility.

Laura works harder than most of my able-bodied clients. She has made amazing progress and can now pull herself up using TRX suspension to a semi-standing position.

Things were going along beautifully until I received a text from her on Saturday July 5. It read - "Have to cancel session Monday. House caught on fire".

Completely devastating.

Laura's mother Oneida is a first grade teacher with the Kansas City, Missouri School District. She alone cares for Laura and they will be without a home for at least 3 to 4 months.
We are pulling together as a community to invite folks to a very special Turbo Kick group exercise class on Saturday July 19 at 9:30am in the upstairs basketball court of the Ward Parkway 24 Hour Fitness in Kansas City, Missouri. It's a "Glow" party so be sure and wear bright neon to show your support.

We are asking for donations to help them rebuild. Donations need to be directed to this website as we cannot take them inside the club. Your help is welcomed, however not necessary for class participation.

Please help make this time a little easier for the Hurse's. We have the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of these people!

Thank you,

Kris Nichols
