Education in Guatemala is only free for the first six years. Dora is determined to keep her four kids in school, but recent events have threatened her ability to pay the fees for this year. More ...

When I went to Guatemala last year, I spent two weeks working with Dora Celada in her occupational therapy program at a home for low-income elderly people.  We became friends, though she doesn't speak English and my Spanish was certainly not amazing.  We've kept in touch, and about a month ago she shared with me her worry that she was going to have to remove her four children from their school because of financial pressures.

As a single mother, Dora relied on help from her mother to care for the children while she worked.  A couple months ago, her mother had a stroke and is no longer able to be a caregiver.  On top of that, Dora's youngest child fractured his hand, requiring orthopedic surgery.  Dora has been unable to work since these two incidents, and consequently can't afford to pay the tuition, books, and uniforms fees for her children's school.  In Guatemala, school is free and compulsory only for the first six years, but Dora knows first-hand that education is the only way her children will make lives above the poverty line.

At last, Dora has been able to return to work, but she owes the school for January-March, a total of 6000 quetzales, or about $1000 CAD.  Unless she can raise the funds soon for this debt, her children will be out of school for this year.

Dora is one of the kindest, most hardworking, resourceful, and openminded people I know.  Her life has never been easy, but she approaches it with humour and grace.  Please contribute whatever you can, no matter how small.  Even spreading this campaign on social media would be a huge help, as I am one of those social media luddites ;).
