As you know the flu has been going around nationwide and the terrifying thing is that the flu can advance to serious complications that can be life-threatening.   In our state 18 people have died from H1N1 this year!

This is a story about an amazing and respectable woman. Her name is Patty and she is not only my co-worker but has also been a wonderful friend for the past 6 years. She is single, has no children and her parents are no longer living.  Patty had had bronchitis symptoms for a couple of weeks but her Dr was out of town so she finally drove herself up to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana, to get a chest xRay and, after checking herself in and asking the staff to contact me, she turned blue, fell to the hard ground and showed no signs of life. The ER immediately went into action to save her life. They took her to ICU, and, to try to stop her respiratory distress, medically induced a coma, hooked her up to lots of tubes and a ventilator to regulate 100% of her breathing, and began dozens of tests to discover the problem.

Four days later the results were in: H1N1 !  Patty remained in the coma for 3 weeks (!) in a Rotoprone Bed which is made to help preserve brain function while alleviating lung congestion. It’s remarkable, but if you need this bed, you probably have a 50-50 chance to live.  During this period, she has missed so much time from her life that she can never get back and has a long Rehab road to recovery ahead of her!

Patty is one of the most generous individuals I have ever known and has so much love in her heart. I’ve never heard her speak a negative word about anyone and always finds the good in people. She tells everyone she has 2 hands to help, 2 shoulders if they need one to cry on, 2 eyes to help them see through their problems and 2 ears for listening. She is passionate about life and helping others who are in need; she always puts others before herself. She is loved by so many people!!!

I have started a fundraiser for Patty to raise money for mortgage/utilities and home care once she gets out of the hospital, since she has no hospitalization insurance and no income when she does not work.  I would love nothing more than to present her with the generosity of others who donated to help her get back on her feet! Could you ever envision being healthy one minute and the next unconscious, missing out on quality of life, waking up in a strange place not being able to remember a thing, not being able to talk due to a trach tube or comprehend what day it is, then discovering how long you’ve been ‘sleeping’? It’s not glamorous, like in the movies!

I know in my heart that God only allows what we can handle, but it’s beyond my imagination the cost that will be associated with being in ICU for a month and looking at months of in-patient and out-patient Rehab.

I have tried to visit her every single day and bring hope and encouragement. Please believe in my words that I am doing everything I can to be a great friend and be there for her during this horrific time.

Hallelujah!  To update Patty’s story, this is Day 43 and praise God, Patty has recovered from H1N1 and will be transferred into Rehab to begin her journey back to health!

I want to thank you so much for reading my story about a woman who means the world to me. I somehow pray that this story may touch your heart and you will want to help Patty in her time of need. I would be completely honored if you could help my friend in any way possible.  Could you donate a little?  Would you SHARE this Fundrazr with your Facebook Friends?  Would you keep my amazing friend in your thoughts and prayers?

Thank you so much!
And God bless you.
