Salams/Hello,

My name is Sana Khan and I am a pre med student that currently does research at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). I graduated from San Jose State University (SJSU) with a bachelor’s degree in Public Health. While there I was constantly told by people about how going to a state school had put me at a disadvantage, that it would be harder for me to go to medical school and that my only chance at a medical degree would be overseas or none. I interviewed at UCSF in my 3rd year for a research position, when I got the position I was beyond awe struck because I was the first SJSU student at UCSF to do research. My boss told me she saw something in me that she hasn't seen in many other students she hired. Passion and perseverance.

A year into starting at UCSF, my principal investigator (PI) approached me with a rare, fascinating case. She asked me if I wanted to take charge of the paper and make it my own, this was huge because the role of first author is always a doctor or a resident very rarely is it a student and if it is, its usually a medical student at that. I was neither, I was simply a pre med student given one of the biggest opportunity of my life. I juggled school, research, family and personal hardship just to constantly learn medical terminology and scholarly paper writing to make my paper publishing worthy. Last week, I got the biggest surprise of my life; my paper had been accepted for publication.

Unfortunately these days more and more journals are charging fees for publishing and the journal I submitted to was no different. As an aspiring physician I do not have the funds necessary to fulfill their fees and currently my PI has run out of funds for me. If funds cannot be found within the given deadline they will withdraw my paper from their journal and my chance at republishing somewhere else will become slim to none. It pains me at the idea of not being able to finance this publication myself, but this is reality and without your help my hard work may not be fruitful. Please I am asking for your help as your donation will not only help publish my first scholarly article, but also act in supporting a milestone in my pursuit of becoming a doctor.
