Alexandra Spencer hasn't added a story.
This November, I will volunteer in the poorest favela communities of
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the host city of the 2016 Olympics and 2014
FIFA World Cup. Your donation will make a difference to the lives of
some of the most beautiful, but underprivileged people in the world.
The 3 million plus inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro's favelas face
daunting challenges every day. Those living in these under privileged
communities in Rio de Janeiro face massive unemployment, unsanitary
living conditions, disease, lack of health care/pre natal care,
malnutrition, poor drinking water, educational shortfalls, drugs,
gangs, violence, domestic abuse, homelessness, and the list goes on
and on. In light of the investment in the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016
Olympics, these are the people who really need to feel the benefits.
In May, I won a complimentary registration fee worth $600 to
attend the JCI World Congress for young leaders in Rio de Janeiro this
November 4-9. With my regular voluntary work here in London, I knew
that if I could afford to go, I would want to spend more time in Rio
working in the community. I took the brave decision to hand in my
notice at work, as I saw this as a sign to begin a new challenge and
to get out of my comfort zone. See I was lucky to win this opportunity
to experience the glamorous side of Rio, but there are thousands of
people in Rio who are not so lucky and I want to extend my time there
to volunteer working with and for them.
Project Favela are a small Rio based enterprise recommended to
me by a friend who runs her own Charitable Foundation and after
extensive communication with Scott Miles (the founder), I am
incredibly excited and nervous by what lays ahead. Project Favela will
place me with a local NGO projects to both challenge myself and put me
to my best use for the community I am immersed in. It is my role to
work in the projects for the families there and in the school they are
part of. No two days will be the same and I will really have to
"roll up my sleeves" to make sure I do the best I can.
Of the funds you raised:
- £500 + anything over the target
will go to Project Favela and the volunteer home that houses the
volunteers.
- £700 for return flights to Brazil.
- £200 for
Yellow Fever vaccination and the travel insurance.
- £100 for
Fundrazr and Paypal fees
- All of it towards a life
enriching experience and the capacity to create positive impact in
the community I work in.
