How many of you woke up this morning and took a shower? How many of you went to your sink or your refrigerator and grabbed a glass of water? NOW, I want you to close your eyes and imagine how much different your life would be if you had to walk, say, 4 miles to get to that water.

4 miles is the average distance that women and children in developing countries have to walk to attain water that often makes them and their families ill.
The lack of clean, safe drinking water is the world's greatest cause of illness, killing more people each year than wars and conflict. A child dies every 15 seconds due to a lack of clean, safe drinking water. Let's do the math:
If a child dies every 15 seconds, that’s more than 2 million each year. One out of every five of these children dies before their fifth birthday.

Ok, we'll stop throwing out the chilling statistics now and tell you OUR story. We are a group of geology majors at Indiana University Northwest (IUN). In 2011, two of our majors went to Capetown, South Africa for their senior capstone. While there, they came to the startling realization about the water crisis in developing countries.

In April 2012, the Geology Club hosted the first annual Walk for Water. People from around the region gathered in Michigan City and walked with milk jugs to symbolize the grueling trek that women and children make each day to access a water source. The generous donations from the event went directly to successfully funding a well in Sierra Leone.

Now that we know we are capable, we're back at it again and we NEED YOUR HELP. So here's what you can do:
1. WALK WITH US. The Second Annual Walk for Water will be April 13, 2013 beginning at 10am at the Marquette Perk in Gary, Indiana. There will be food, fun, and prizes for all who attend. Plus-walking is good for you!
2. DONATE. A little goes a long way. A donation of $1 supplies a person clean water for a day and a donation of $10 supplies a person clean water for LIFE.

Our goal is to raise enough money to build another well. The average cost of a well is $5,000. When water comes, everything changes!

Water is life-Every drop counts!
