Ninth grade Lit and Comp teachers Evan Tyler and Kacy Smith Paterson are working to create engaging and culturally sustaining reading units at Southridge High School. These units will be shared with other ninth grade teachers. 

Mr. Tyler is building a unit that focuses on print and graphic novel versions of Jason Reynold's Long Way Down. Having access to both versions would help our teachers meet students where they are as readers. 

Ms. Smith Paterson is designing a reading and narrative writing unit around graphic novels. Our students love graphic novels, and there is much to learn about art, design, and writing from them.

Our biggest barrier is a lack of books. With classroom library funding nonexistent, we need to turn to other sources of funding to get books into our students' hands -- and this is where you can help! Our total cost for these books and resources is $2900. The Southridge PTO is generously providing $1900 towards this effort and we are partnering with Beaverton Education Foundation for the next $1000. BEF is matching all donations towards that $1000 goal dollar-for-dollar! That's just $500 left to raise!  The average cost of each book is $12, and with the match, your donation goes twice as far!
