Positive Life Kenya is a multifaceted non-profit organization based in Nairobi, Kenya. Over the years, through cumulative efforts they have birthed and fostered two schools and countless programs to support local children and families who are struggling to make ends meet.
Due to the current political climate, currently far too many children are without access to food, many, many families cannot meet the basic needs of their children without outside support. Positive Life Kenya runs two schools, Tumaini and Kiotani.
Tumaini (Swahili for “hope”) encourages and nourishes children who would otherwise not have access to education and in many cases, food. The New Hope Day School, is located in the Kicheko slum areas of Mlolongo, providing education and daily nutrition to more than 100 vulnerable children who are in the age bracket of 3-12 years.
Kiotoni, AKA “The Nest”, is a Primary School & Boarding Facility that houses nearly 200 vulnerable children. A majority of these children are orphaned from the surrounding communities.
The initiative of Kiotani is inspiring but still in a formative state. With the initial and ongoing support from a couple of partners, we have been able to purchase 9 acres of land in Lukenya Hills, drill a water well, install solar panels, and build the infrastructure for a complete boarding facility. We have been working towards sustainability efforts by building a greenhouse and raising livestock. However, these efforts can still be challenging due to drought and also with the cost of food for livestock. In which case we still outsource some food items for the students.
Food prices have been rising gradually since 2022 due to low local food availability, drought and other factors. This has put a major stressor on Positive Life Kenya and the families which they support. Scarce resources have made it impossible to sustain our initiative without support. Without the safety net of PLK, roughly 300 children are at risk of losing access to their main food supply.
It costs roughly $40 a month to feed a child at Kiotani School (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner), and $16 at Tumaini (Lunch and the 10 O'clock Porridge). Coming from the West, it's hard to fathom that that is all, and yet it is out of reach for many. So, we are calling in helping hands to support the cause during this unstable time.
