Sarah Common hasn't added a story.
I started boxing this year hoping to build my strength and balance (and to punch out some feelings for all the things I cannot control in the world that feel dark and meaningless).
I found way more than that at Eastside Boxing's Front Line Fight Club, one of the many programs this inclusive gym space offers to build access to supportive community for all. FLFC offers frontline workers in the DTES a space to come and sweat out some of their pain and loss, in solidarity. Other programs create space for youth, women and families to do the same. No-one gets turned away. Everyone is welcome wherever they are at. Much like our work at Hives for Humanity, this gym is creating access points that bring people in, empower them to carry their gifts with pride, and to develop their self-worth. We all deserve that!
For the next three months I'm sweating and shaking, focusing and fighting, and fundraising all the while to support these programs. If I work hard in the training ring, and raise $2000 or more, I might get a fight, a chance to dance under the lights and show my love for this program. Please help! $10 x 200 ppl seems do-able to me! 4 x $500 would make that double (and I can get a tax receipt for anyone who makes a donation of $500 or more!)
More to come, thanks for being here,
Sarah
Founded in 2012, Aprons for Gloves Boxing Association is a non-profit organization focused on providing community outreach through the sport of boxing. Based in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, the organization was developed by a small group of professionals and entrepreneurs who seized an opportunity to re-establish a historic boxing program for at-risk women and youth. The program offers free mentorship and training to individuals who may otherwise not have the resources or support to participate in such activities. The sport of boxing teaches discipline, respect, hard work and self-control. Training results in positive self-esteem, good health and camaraderie for its practitioners.
Restaurant Rumble 2019
Every year bartenders, chefs, dishwaters, servers, baristas and all sorts of individuals from the Gastown community get together to train at the Eastside Boxing Club to fight in Restaurant Rumble.
In order to attend training, each fighter is required to raise $2000 for charity before they can compete at the Rumble.
