Logan—named after the Marvel character Wolverine—is as strong and courageous as his name suggests. A big ball of energy who is equal parts mischief and snuggles, Logan and his parents, Carrie and Scott, have embarked on the battle of a lifetime.
After being incorrectly diagnosed as asthmatic, it was heartbreaking to learn that both of Logan's lungs were barely functioning. Hooked up to an oxygen tank 24/7, Logan and his parents left their Gravenhusrt home and nestled in at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children to eagerly await a match.
It was bittersweet in September 2014 when Logan successfully received a double-lung transplant. Since then, Logan has enjoyed an active life including going to school at the Ronald McDonald House, playing with his friends and, of course, building Star Wars Lego.
A few months after the surgery, though, Logan complained of a sore throat. One look at his tonsils and the doctors knew something was up. After undergoing surgery to remove his tonsil, a biopsy revealed he had lymphoma. Only one per cent of transplant patients will develop cancer from the anti-rejection medication within the first year. Logan, unfortunately, is that one per cent. With spirits still high, Logan and his family are determined to beat this.
Here's why they need help:
Because of the string of specialist appointments and long-term stints at Sick Kids, both of Logan's parents have had to leave their jobs. They are currently carrying a mortgage on their home and also paying rent at the Ronald McDonald House in order to stay close to the hospital.
With no income, paying rent and facing everyday expenses such as food and utilities is nearly impossible.
To top it off, their fixer-upper home has had to undergo a facelift so that when Logan can eventually come home, it will be a healthy environment for his new set of lungs. The family has all the building supplies, but lacks the people power. Your donation will help with cost of living, everyday expenses and also labour to help the family get their home up to standard.
If you're in the Barrie/Gravenhurst area and would like to donate your time and skills helping with the reno, please contact Amy Valm at amy.valm@gmail.com.
