Paraplegic ski equipment stolen

Cargo trailer filled with gear taken from north Edmonton home

CBC News Posted: Nov 28, 2014 7:34 PM MT (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/paraplegic-ski-equipment-stolen-1.2854515)

A cargo trailer filled with ski equipment for paraplegic athletes and skiers otherwise requiring the use of wheelchairs has been stolen from a north Edmonton home.

The equipment is used by para-nordic participants or individuals with spinal injuries and other conditions, said Michael Neary, sport manager for Cross Country Alberta.

“It’s very sad and unfortunate," he said. "It’s very specialized and unique to the participants that use it.“

Sit-skiPolice believe the suspects may not have known the contents of the trailer. (Supplied)

The trailer was parked Tuesday night in a back driveway of the home at 44th Street and 119th Avenue.

The owner noticed the trailer missing on Wednesday. The culprits had cut through several locks securing the trailer, hitched it to what's believed to be a truck and drove off.

“Whoever stole this trailer may have been unaware what the contents were, or the value this equipment has to special needs athletes,” said Acting Staff Sgt. Pat Bruni, in a news release.

“We’re asking the public to be on the lookout for the ski equipment, which is quite distinctive, and could be dumped in a back alley or property somewhere.

"It’s also possible the equipment could be up for sale online.”

The trailer is described as a white 2011 Mirage Cargo Craft Trailer, with single axle and 10-feet long.

The trailer contained  $12,000 worth of cross-country ski equipment for disabled athletes and $25,000 worth of V-boards for making trails in the snow.
