TANK'S STORY HAS CHANGED! Because of so many wonderful people, he's getting the surgeries he needs, we'll have him trained and placed soon. So excited! TANK-YOU all!
*******
Someone abandoned this loveable Pit (We're calling the muscled up guy "Tank") and we just couldn't imagine why. Now, we know - and he's going to need a few surgeries to be deemed "adoptable." Without the surgeries, the shelter would choose to put him down instead of putting him up for adoption. There's no way Tank's story should end like that - please help us.
Tank was very sweet from the first moment he met us. He sat sloppy
against my legs and lay in the floor for belly-rubs. He licked my
hand. I couldn't imagine why someone would abandon such a sweet boy.
Then we looked closer, and noticed that he had scratches on his body,
and numerous scabbed areas. We wanted to know his age, so we looked
at his teeth - that's when even more of the story started to come
clear. On his nose are signs of scraping - like he's been trying to
free himself from something. His teeth are ground down and some are
broken. He's been chewing on either rocks, or metal.
Then, we noticed him licking his butt. When we lifted his tail,
we saw blood. He had a small sore area protruding from his anus. Not
good.
With all of this knowledge, we knew finding him a home
immediately would be tough. So, we took him to a low-kill shelter
nearby. Unfortunately, they are very full right now, and the officer
(Whom we know and trust) warned us that Tank wouldn't have a very good
shot, given his medical issues. He'd get a 7-day quarantine, at which
point they'd have to decide if they could make room for him. He
wouldn't, however, get any real medical treatment. So, they'd
basically have to decide if he were adoptable 7 days from now ... when
the sore in his butt had gotten even worse, and nothing else had
improved either. What that all adds up to, is Tank's death.
We couldn't have that. So, we took him to the Vet, to get a
clearer picture of what he needs in order to be "adoptable."
The Vet did a basic exam, and found that Tank is all-in-all, a pretty
healthy dog. His heartbeat is strong. His breathing is normal. He's
not excreting anything anywhere. But, he does have a double
ear-infection, some obvious dental problems (worn, broken teeth, and
apparently one dead), and what we have now been told is a polyp
growing in his anus. The following is a breakdown of what Tank needs:
Basic exam (completed)
Treatment for Ear Infection
(completed)
Medication for Ear Infection (purchased, in
progress)
X-Rays to determine dental damage
(likely) surgery
to remove damaged teeth
X-Rays to determine extenet polyp
situation (can it be removed with a simple from-rear procedure, or
more invasive?)
Surgery to remove polyp
Biopsy of
polyp
Heartworm
Test
Bloodwork
Vaccinations
Neuter
Anesthesia/Fluids/Pain
Meds
Antibiotics
Buster Collar (purchased, currently on his
cute face)
All told, an estimated $2500 - $3000 in expenses, with $240 already
paid for the basic exam and ear infection treatment.
