For My  first marathon, I wanted to be able to raise money for a charity which is close to my heart rather than just a general charity where the money would just be lost amongst adminstration and high street rent charges. Alex Lewis is a local man who I remember as a young good looking carefree twenty something propping up the bar in my friend's pub. Tragically,  a year ago all that changed , as Alex describes it

' Today is precisely one year since fate altered my life,my family’s and my friends life forever. At 8.20 I was rushed into the ambulance,as we started moving Lucy,by my side, was told that they needed to shave ten minutes of the journey time for me to stand a chance of survival.I was slipping in and out of consciousness as we arrived at Winchester. We were ushered straight through to the resuscitation unit and within minutes my internal organs were failing,I fell into a coma and placed on life support.

What happened next is something no loved one should ever have to go through. The hospital consultant feared the worst and Lucy and my mother were asked to say their final goodbyes.Fate was incredibly cruel that day.

To think what my family endured over the next week or so makes my eye lids heavy with tears. They were the ones suffering and living through the tempestuous Strep A infection.Weeks later we were to encounter amputation, dialysis and further complications resulting in the man I am today.

The man I am today has been made possible by hundreds of people. From consultants, nurses, physios and carers to my wonderful family and friends.Yours and their support through the last year has been second to none. You have got me through the darkest times and have been influential in the happiest of times.

I sat opposite my wonderful little boy this morning. He was munching on a piece of toast. As he finished his toast, his face covered in jam,he looked at me and produced the biggest smile.A smile so poignant and beautiful,to think I might not have ever seen that smile again makes you realise how important and unique life is.

Fate has spared my life and I intend to live it to the full, starting with my impending marriage to Lucy.My New Year doesn’t start in six weeks time,it starts today and I intend it to be a happy one.'

For every painstaking mile of my marathon, i will be thinking of Alex and his family and hoping that I can raise as much money as I can to make his life and that of his loved ones that little bit better.. please read Alex's story
