****Race run and finished!  So thankful for everyone's support in so many ways!  We didn't quite hit our goal, so we are going to leave this up here for a bit longer in hopes that we do!  Please help spread the word!****

Straight to the Point: I am running a 5k on Thanksgiving and need 12 people to donate $35 so for the next year we can sponsor this girl being raised with her brother by a single mom living in extreme poverty. The money goes not to just her but to the whole community, allowing World Vision to give them clean water, agriculture, medical care, education, and economic development, lifting them up to self sustainability as a whole.

The Longer Version:

What did you want to be when you grew up? What were your Big Dreams in life?

That little girl there, Sindisiwe, she has Big Dreams, too. She's a kid just like we were, just like our kids are. But the chances of her reaching her dreams are extremely limited, because Sindisiwe lives in South Africa in extreme poverty.

Sindisiwe is 8 years old and lucky to be in school right now. She loves math! (Future doctor fighting Ebola and AIDS? Future computer programmer creating sustainable technology for her community?) Unfortunately, Sindisiwe also has to go fetch water since there isn't a tap in her house. At her age she will most likely be carrying 5 gallons an average distance of 3.5 miles. This is going to interfere with her going to school. So is drinking the water. Untreated, it will probably give her chronic diarrhea. With her mother trying to feed 2 mouths alone on roughly a dollar a day, there is no money left for a doctor. If they do go, she will miss an opportunity to work, and they will have to do without food for several days.

I want to sponsor Sindisiwe because a girl and her brother being raised by a single mother are very near and dear to my heart. I know how much my own mother struggled to provide for us and I cannot even begin to imagine what that looks like in this mother's eyes. As hard as times were for us sometimes, this girl's mother is praying to even be in THAT situation. Wow.

I had Big Dreams, too, as a child, and I know all my mother wanted was to be able to provide a life for my brother and I conducive to attaining those dreams. I want the same for this girl.

Why run? For me, as someone living with a medical condition that leaves me in chronic pain, I cannot imagine having this disease and being THERE instead of HERE. So for me, it is the greatest symbol of giving thanks I know. Thanks that I have had the available medical care and friend and family support and encouragement to nurse myself this far back into health. I may not be pain free, but there was a time when I was completely bedridden and could do nothing but stare at the ceiling and cry. But now I am here in life. Using what I have to be ever so thankful, letting it not stop with me but using my blessings to continue to help others' lives.

So help me help Sindisiwe. Be one of the 12 people needed to change her life for forever with just one $35 donation, and on Thanksgiving Day I will run, in thanks for what I have, in thanks for what you have given, in thanks that we, all of us together, are radically changing this girl's life for forever.
