I am a Social Work student and through grass roots efforts I am increasing support to our city's homeless people and working with other volunteer organizations. Little things make a big impact.

I am a Social Work student and help in existing volunteer services for our city's homeless communitys. Homelessness does not have to be a permanent situation and many just need to be guided to the proper organizations that are tailored to each individual's needs. It sounds easy but takes time and energy. Living on the street can have negative affects on a person from thirst and hunger to lowered expected mortality rates. It can be scary and trusting others becomes difficullt because of the things a person experiences while trying to regain their foothold in life. Minor donations of snacks, old clothes, water bottles, hygeine kits and even time to ride through the streets and  parks to give guidance to the homeless can make the difference of a couple weeks on the street instead of years on end. Many organizations are trying to manage this crisis and restore hope in those who are close to giving up on the existing assistance programs, unfortunately housing assistance waiting lists are over 50 families deep. There is no way to avoid living on the street for many folks so we try to give them the basics to stay clean and fed while in limbo. It is important to take the time to get to know the people and offer to review their documentation and see that they are doing the right things to help themselves and offer guidance to those who are less resourceful. People can slip through the cracks of the federal system and more than one attempt may be needed.  Some were raised on the streets by the homeless community and do not understand any other way of life so it is a matter of educating them and earning their trust by starting on helping them with the daily needs in their lives which are often little things that do not cost much. Right now many are in need of mobility devices such as used wheelchairs and used mobility scooters. Our main homeless shelter needs a deep freezer or reach in cooler to help chill the cases of water that get donated. Please feel free to contact me by text at 949 606 6051 or email me at if you want to just spend one afternoon helping even if you don't have anything to offer. Just your smile and willingness to help can be bigger than one can imagine. I started off with just giving out left over pizza, blowpops and unconditional friendship and today get to experience helping 100s a day. If you are interested in knowing more about the different organizations and maybe even becoming a volunteer in one on a regular basis I will gladly PM the information.
