One evening last November, Alex Lewis, 33 and a father of one, was feeling unwell and went to bed early. He awoke at 2am to use the toilet and noticed that he had blood in his urine and his skin was turning purple. Alex’s condition deteriorated quickly and he was soon on his way to Winchester Hospital where he was diagnosed with Group A streptococcus, a normally harmless bacteria the body should filter out. However, in Alex’s case, it developed into septicaemia and toxic shock syndrome and Alex’s organs began to shut down one by one. Alex was put into a medically-induced coma, while his partner Lucy was told that he had just a 3% chance of survival. Over the next few days, Alex’s feet, fingertips, arms, lips, nose and even the tips of his ears turned black as his flesh died. Incredibly, Alex beat the odds to survive and was transferred to Salisbury District Hospital, where he was given the devastating news that as a result of the illness, he would lose both his legs and his left arm.
Alex has dealt with all of this with incredible strength, determination and optimism. In June, Alex was told that an infection in the bones in his right arm meant that his one remaining limb would have to be amputated. Alex described this as a “minor setback”. Alex’s sheer will and determination is almost enough on its own to help him continue his remarkable recovery, however, as time goes on, Alex will inevitably need help as he learns to adapt to life as a quadruple amputee. Alex has recently moved to a specially adapted home and faces months of gruelling rehabilitation, learning to use prosthetic limbs and learning again to do the things we all take for granted in order to live as independent a life as possible with his partner and young son.
We are a group of twelve friends who until recently spent most of our time eating too much, drinking too much and not exercising enough. A short bike ride was beyond most of us so the thought of tackling a Tough Mudder was frankly ridiculous. However, we decided we needed a challenge and decided to combine our challenge with an opportunity to raise some money for Alex, who was landlord of our local pub when his illness struck.
Tough Mudder is a 12 mile obstacle course, designed by British Special Forces to test all-round strength, stamina, teamwork and mental grit. Obstacles include ice baths, electric shocks and lots and lots of mud! Training has been far from easy, but whenever we are feeling lazy or unmotivated, we only have to remind ourselves that whatever we may face on October 25th, Alex is facing greater challenges every day, and if he can do so with such strength, optimism and humour, surely we can deal with a little obstacle course…
Thanks for reading, and if you’d like to give us a bit of extra motivation to help us round the course, please give generously!
