Did you know it is twice as hard to get into a UK Performing Arts School than Oxbridge? I have gained a place at the world famous Italia Conti Academy, but I am not entitled to a student loan. Should money stand in the way of fulfilling true potential? More ...

Please help me become an outstanding British performer

Hi, my name is Emma, I’m 19 years old and I greatly need your help. But before I explain why, I firstly want to tell you a story...

                          Once Upon A Time...

When my great grandfather was a young man he was invited to a presentation about a brand new invention. He went to London and was asked if he'd like to invest some money in this unknown product. He thought it was interesting but unfortunately couldn't really see the potential and so he didn't invest. The presentation was given by a man named John Logie Baird and the new invention was the television.

I have just been offered an amazing opportunity to attend one of the world’s most prestigious performing arts schools in London that boasts a huge number of famous graduates, including Leona Lewis, Naomi Campbell, Pixie Lott, Noel Coward, Lisa Snowdon, Russell Brand, Wendy Richard, Clare Sweeney, Newton Faulkner, Sharon Osbourne, Leslie Phillips, Kelly Brook,Tracey Ullman, Leslie Ash and many more.

                             Take a Chance

I feel a connection to the story about my great grandfather because it highlights my most valued belief – “Take a chance.” Unfortunately, he didn’t. I however, did – I took the chance to go for something that seemed utterly unattainable to a young Devon girl with only a passion to dance, sing and perform.  I worked hard and went to London for a demanding audition at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. Imagine how I felt when, a few weeks later, I opened a letter saying...

...I got in! Out of several thousand applications, I was one of the successful few to gain one of only 50 places. Wow!

Now I am asking you to take a chance on me. With your help, I'd like to believe I will be able to achieve my true potential and goal of becoming a respected British performer.

“If you never try, you’ll never know”

The saying “If you never try, you’ll never know” holds a lot of meaning for me. I tell this to myself all the time. I remember murmuring the words under my breath as I posted the application form to Italia Conti. I also remember walking up the steps on the day of my audition and playing the phrase over and over again in my head. I’m beginning to believe it might be my good luck charm because everytime I’ve used it, good things have come my way. Or maybe the words themselves have just given me the strength to pursue new things – things that I would never have even dreamed of.

A chance, combined with talent, passion and some luck, should be all that is needed, right?

Unfortunately not. The tuition fees are staggering for a 19 year old to raise and this, dear potential sponsor, is where I desperately need a little help from you. At £5330 per term, I'm aiming to raise £16,000 to cover three terms (my first year).  After that, who knows - I'm hoping some big sponsors will have started to support me by then, or I may get a second year scholarship, or be lucky enough to win the lottery!

You have the power to really make a difference! I know, in this fast moving and cynical world, statements like that don't always sink in and are easily overlooked... but...if it was you, or your son or daughter or a friend asking for help, you'd probably be happy to donate £5 or £10. The difference comes when a stranger asks and you don't have any emotional connection; I'm sure you are thinking right now why on earth should I give any of my hard earned money away? I know, because I would feel the same.

I'll tell you why though, and it goes back to that phrase 'making a difference'. If you were to come along with me on this journey, then you would begin to feel an attachment to me, and me to you. I'd keep you updated every step of the way. Then, after a while, you'll feel that you're not supporting a stranger anymore and will feel that you really are making a difference to a real person that you actually know. How great and satisfying it would be to be part of the journey and seeing how it all progresses and ends up...who knows, one day you might be able to say 'I knew her and helped her out when she was just starting out'.

                             A bit about me...

My first standing ovation is a moment that I'll never forget. Filled with an overwhelming sense of pride and achievement, I was struck with a burning desire to become the best performer I could be. Throughout my life, I have lived by the mantra "aim high and achieve the best". My goal, therefore, is to strive for success by learning in an environment that will inspire, motivate and excite me.

My dedication to being a successful performer has been long-standing throughout my life; I have taken part in many productions as both an actress and a dancer. Alongside this, I have channelled my creativity and expressed myself through music and songwriting since the age of 15. Despite achieving academic success in my A-Levels with an A* in both Drama and Media and an A in English, I decided to choose the music route rather than university, to follow my passion for performing. I have busked in the busy streets of Exeter and played many gigs at local venues, festivals and weddings in front of large crowds, building a loyal fan base. When I was 17, I got 'spotted' by a music manager who helped develop me as a credible artist. I currently play in and around Exeter as an acoustic singer-songwriter but would now like to use and develop all of my performing skills.

Rejection and disappointment is inevitable, as I have experienced, but failure is not an option for me and I am more determined than ever to achieve my ambition to be an outstanding performer and have a successful, fulfilling career in the industry. As a passionate and focused individual, I strongly feel that I am ready for advanced specialist training and would thrive in a first class establishment like Italia Conti.

                           The next chapter

Here I am on the threshold of starting an amazing new chapter but still very uncertain whether it will happen, all because of the high fees. Performing arts schools do not attract normal student loans and I will not qualify for any government grant (i.e. Dance and Drama Award). My parents and I have raised enough to get me started through the first term, but after that it is going to be touch and go. It is a race against time as I don’t want to start in September and have to leave at Christmas!

                               Thank You

I’d also like to draw your attention to the list of perks on the right. I have put a lot of thought into ensuring there’s a really good list of interesting and worthwhile perks for all donation ranges. After all, I’m asking you for a lot of money and you deserve to have a good choice of thank you presents.

P.S. Your help will genuinely be appreciated and IS needed. I hope the above has inspired you to feel like you want to donate to my campaign and I look forward to personally thanking every single one of you.
