WHO: Nigel Kirk, a freelance activist for homeless issues with lived experience
WHAT: Attend national conference on homelessness

WHY: To speak to the often neglected issue of dignity and ensure the homeless have a voice at the event

Hi. My Name is Nigel, and I am a freelance social justice activist with lived experience in homelessness. My experience on the streets taught me that discrimination and social attitudes towards homelessnes are the biggest barrier any homeless person on the streets faces.

I am still in extreme poverty and at risk of homelessness at any moment and currently rent a room provided by Calgary's Salvation Army (Centre of Hope). I have been doing activism pushing for better treatment of the homeless in all situations, including employment, in programs, hospitals, jails, and especially in shelters.

The funds here will allow me to attend the conference on ending homelessness in Vancouver in November 2014 and would go towards the following:

-registration ($525 before August 29th, $650 after)

-Accomodations ($125-150 a night for at least three, possibly four nights)

-Air Fare (varies depending on when I book the flight)

-Food (I could do this on no more than $30 a day)

-And if possible, a little bit of pocket cash. There may be literature for sale on the issues of homelessness and community developement, but I would also like to visit places in Vancouver such as the downtown eastside, so bus fare is important too.
