Ride To Give hasn't added a story.
Last Tuesday, December 10th, Martha Harmon was driving her 10 year old son Tyler to school with her 3 year old daughter Olivia in tow. They were in the rain on a curvy road near their home that in spots had pooled with water, when Martha tried to turn and the wheels did not respond. The car flipped and thankfully there were people outside that were able to assist within seconds. Tyler was non-responsive and practically dead on the scene. After receiving CPR by first responders, he was resuscitated and rushed with Martha to Athens Regional Hospital. Olivia was rushed to Scottish Rite. Life-flight was out of the question due to the weather, and just as Martha's husband Todd reached her and their son, Tyler was transferred to Scottish Rite as well.
Martha suffered a broken tail bone, broken nose, many bruises, concussion, internal bleeding, and swelling from her seat belt. She was released from ARH and came with her mom to Scottish Rite to be with Todd and the kids. Tyler suffered a lacerated liver, a brain injury, a broken right arm, and a neck and spinal cord injury of separated vertebrae from the spine. He has been sedated and basically unconscious since the accident. However he will open his eyes and move his limbs slightly on command. But that's about it all he can do. He had a trache put in yesterday and has not made much progress in a week. He has just been kept stable in preparation for the spinal surgery he will be having soon. His doctor is concerned he may never breathe on his own or walk again and even possibly not have any significant movement from his limbs because the area where his surgery is on the spine controls those motor functions. It's going to be a long road with both kids but Tyler's road will be the longest. Olivia suffered a brain injury and lots of bruising and swelling of her left eye area and forehead. She had about four stitches put in from where her eyelid was split from the blunt force of the accident. All three were wearing seat belts/child restraints, yet were injured gravely from the force of the accident.
Olivia will be in the hospital for at least another 2 weeks, then will continue outpatient therapy after being discharged. Martha's tailbone will take 6-8 weeks to heal. Tyler's prognosis is uncertain until he has the spinal surgery and they wake him to see the extent of his permanent injuries.
We at the RTG feel the need to help this thoughtful family as they prepare to travel the long road to recovery with Olivia and Tyler. They have asked for nothing…we tracked THEM down. There are plenty of expenses: Loss of wages, gas, meals, insurance co-pays and deductibles.
Let's help Martha and Todd remain at Tyler and Olivia's bedside for as long as possible in the way only our ARMY can.
