My Mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer over 14 years ago.  But having undergone treatments, she has been in remission for 14 years as of November 4th, 2013.  I've been growing my hair to donate to cancer wigs and would also like to raise money to help support Breast Cancer Care.  I have chosen two organizations to support.

The first is Breast Cancer Action Kingston www.bcakingston.org.  This is a group that my mother has been very active with over the years.  This is a volunteer survivor led charitable organization which provides survivor directed education, counseling, and support, to men and women living with breast cancer, their families, and the community at large in the Kingston area.

The second group is the Breast Cancer Supportive Care Foundation www.bcscf.com.  As I currently live in Calgary, I would like to support an organization in my own community and have several friends who might wish to do the same.  BCSCF is a non-profit organization based in Calgary led by a team of healthcare professionals offering support to breast cancer patients through individual and group care programs that help patients navigate the many physical, and emotional side effects that arise from breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.

I believe both of these to be important causes because, while finding a cure for cancer is the ultimate goal, I feel too often the need to provide support, education and counseling to those currently dealing with cancer are overlooked.

Here is my plan:  I have set a target of $4000 for this fundraiser.  How did I arrive at this figure?  Simple!  I have 384 friends on Facebook, and a few followers on Twitter.  I figure that an average donation might be $20.  If half of my friends were to make an average donation then it would reach my $4000 target.  Fear not, if I do not reach my target I still plan to cut my hair, but if the target is reached then I not only intend to cut my hair but I will also shave my head.  Now I want to be clear on what this means - when I say "shave my head", I'm talking short buzz cut.  Having never shaved my head before I have no idea whether I can pull off such a look.  Now don't be disappointed because I have a plan for this too!  As my target is $4000, I've decided that if I exceed it by 50% (meaning raise $6000), then I will fully shave my head down to the skin.

Almost everyone will be affected by Breast Cancer at some point in their life whether it be a Mother, Sister, Aunt, Grandmother, Daughter, or friend.  So come on everybody, give generously and let's help support these groups that provide such necessary programs to their communities!
