This smiling face belongs to a young man named Michael.

Michael and his family live in our county, and in many ways, Michael is a typical teenager. He loves playing video games and watching movies, and his favorite super hero is Spiderman. He is shy at first, but opens up and talks as he becomes more comfortable. He loves to ask questions, wants to help others in any way he can, and is one very strong young man.

This past summer, Michael was diagnosed with cancer. By the time he was diagnosed, Michael had a Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor in his chest cavity that was roughly the size of a grapefruit. The tumor occupies portions of the left chest cavity wall, ribs, and lung, and is so large it is compromising both the function of Michael's left lung and the use of his left arm.

Michael is is currently undergoing both outpatient radiation and inpatient chemotherapy treatments, in hopes of shrinking the tumor. Whether Michael will be able to keep his left arm or will require amputation is yet to be determined.

No stranger to adversity, Michael also lives with both a genetic disorder called Neurofibromatosis and with Autism.

Michael was brought into our lives because he dreams of becoming a Police Officer.

Through the Make a Wish Foundation, TJ is working to make Michael's dream come true.

On Friday November 1, 2013, Michael will be a Police Officer for a Day. He will be picked up from home in a police vehicle, and will spend the day participating in events in various departments in St. Joseph County.

We are hoping to raise enough funds to present Michael with a very special (single-handed solution) gift at the end of his Police Officer for a Day event. If there are any additional funds, we would like to present Michael's family with gift cards to help make this ordeal a little more manageable.

If you are so inclined, please consider donating. No amount is too little. We are firm believers that $2 and $5 are worthy and generous donations, and as I have been so wisely taught, when you give a little, you really can change a lot!     xoxoxo
