Tara Onks hasn't added a story.
Kendyl and Sydney are sisters who are both type 1 diabetics. Sydney was diagnosed at age 2 and Kendyl at age 7. Being diabetic means both girls have to follow strict diets, prick their finger to check their sugar levels 6-8 times a day and be on insulin. The girls struggle with their blood sugars constantly going either high or low. When their sugars get off it makes them feel nauseous, stomach pain, weak, dizzy, clammy, confused and all around bad. The long term complications such as kidney failure, heart disease, blindness, and amputations come from their blood sugars being high and low to often. If their sugar gets to low they can very easily go into a diabetic coma...or death. Our biggest fear has always been that their sugar will drop will they sleep and they will slip into a coma and we will be completely unaware until to late. As parents we will do any and everything we can to help them keep their sugars as controlled as possible Part of that is we are getting them both Diabetic Alert Dogs. These dogs are highly trained and can smell when their sugar STARTS to drop or raise way before the girls feel it. As such, we can catch the sugars before they get bad!! The dogs will also sleep in their room at night to help protect the girls and keep them from going into those dangerous lows. The price for these dogs are expensive...$27,000 for them. We have managed to raise enough to bring the first dog home and are only $3700 away from reaching our final goal. We pray to get there soon!! God Bless.
