The Michigan Urban Farming Initiative (MUFI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that seeks to engage members of the Michigan community in sustainable agriculture. The need for food security coupled with the immense amount of vacant land and prevalence of blighted structures in Detroit have become significant challenges for the growth and sustainability of the city. However, these same challenges provide unique opportunities for urban agriculture.  By reframing agriculture as a platform to promote education, sustainability, and community, while simultaneously reducing socioeconomic disparity, MUFI seeks to empower urban communities, solve many social problems facing Detroit, and potentially develop a broader model for redevelopment for other communities.

Over the past 1.5 years MUFI has hosted over 2,000 volunteers who collectively have put in over 15,000 hours creating one of the largest urban farms in the Metro-Detroit area. Currently our farm is producing thousands of pounds of fresh, organic, Detroit-grown produce that is actively used by our community in Detroit’s North End.

Now we need your help to acquire the city-owned lots that our farm is located on so that we can secure community-driven healthy food access in the North End. We need to raise approximately $15,000 to secure this vibrant community resource which has become a staple for many residents and serves as a landmark for the area.
