Becoming a quadriplegic at the age of 65 has been quite a challenge. While the medical challenges have been enormous, we have had great support learning how to live in a new way, and how to manage the logistics with our new constraints. The biggest challenges we now face are financial. Our current home is in Valdez, Alaska and we can no longer live there, first because the average annual snowfall is 400 inches and it is nearly impossible to access the outdoors from October through April; second, it is 306 miles to the nearest major medical facility and access to care is a requirement as a quadriplegic. The VA has been so helpful and will provide us with all the medical and life function tools, it cannot help us to obtain appropriate housing in Anchorage, AK, or a fit for purpose vehicle. The VA cannot release Grandpa Don from the Hospital until we can show them we have a safe and appropriate home to go to that is adequately suited for a quadriplegic’s needs.

We have to find a new home in Anchorage that is handicap accessible and purchase a handicap accessible vehicle. Each of our daughters are trying to help us come up with a funding for these needs, but so far, they are intending to use their own money to purchase our home and vehicle. Both are young, professional women with young children, and these purchases will be difficult for them. Social Security disability will help us pay for our monthly expenses, but as you all well know they will in no way be enough to meet our immediate needs. We prayed about this and our Lord laid on our hearts to put pride aside and let you know what we were facing. If any of you have the means to help us with a donation - no matter how small - we will use it to purchase a handicap accessible house and vehicle. We believe that God is in control of our situation and will not fail us on helping us get a home and transportation. We believe God has called Grandpa Don and Grandma Peggy to be ministers of his word and share with people how God can be glorified even in the most challenging circumstances. So we are asking that if God has blessed you and you are able to make a donation to our cause we will be forever thankful.
