I rescued Major from a kill shelter in Bakersfield CA last week. He displayed a wonky looking eye in his pictures. I believe this may have turned off a lot of rescues and adopters. I'm in the Chicago area and became his only hope to save him. I was able to find a experienced volunteer who offered to get him out and on a plane to me. She had Major out of the shelter with just a couple hours to spare before his euthanasia at closing time. I have Major now and he has seen Dr. Tracy at Ridge Animal Hospital in Lansing IL. and the wonky eye turns out to be a dead eye that he has lived with. It becomes sticky and crusty from the constant ooz that is emitted from the still functioning glands that surround the eye. This can lead to constant infections. Also discovered were loose teeth and a need for a dental. And as if this isn't bad enough, he's unaltered and needs to be neutered. This work will all be done in one session to avoid having him going under more then once for surgery. the cost of it all is expected to be in the $700 range. Add to that the $600 I have already invested to get him out of the shelter, purchase of a kennel, a plane ticket to get him to me, and two vet visits, I am looking at a $1300 rescue effort. I am not keeping Major. He will be available for adoption in a month. The surgeries are scheduled in two weeks.
