The Disabled Children's Association is on a mission to help 13 year old Kaitlyn Adams receive a life-saving bone marrow transplant. The following is a very touching letter written by the very strong and warm spirited, Kaitlyn Adams. (My name is Kaitlyn Adams. I’m thirteen years old and I live in Waldorf, Maryland with my parents Paul and Tijuana Adams, my brother Jalen and our family dog Taz. I’m also surrounded by a host of family and friends. I have the “Cell”, which is more commonly known as Sickle Cell Anemia. I was diagnosed with this disease (type SS) when my mother had an amniocentesis done when she was 6 months pregnant with me. You can tell I have the “Cell” when certain situations occur that don’t usually affect others. For instance, my body does not adjust well with extreme weather changes and when I’m placed under a lot of stress. If all of a sudden we were to experience a change in the current hot humid weather to a rainy cool day, it would probably trigger a negative reaction in my body. Also, there have been times when I’m under a tremendous work load at school and studying for exams at home, it sometimes can bring on what’s called a “pain episode”. The pain usually occurs in my back, arms, and legs and at times is unbearable. In order to control and get some relief from my pain episodes I take various medicines. Unfortunately, if the medicines don’t help I have to be hospitalized for treatment. There have been times while in the hospital I’ve experienced other complications like infection, fever, and the need for blood transfusions. You can not tell I have the “Cell” because I constantly strive to live a normal life. Although this does not come easy, I am an academic scholar and I attend Davis Middle School which is located in Waldorf, Maryland. I’m enrolled in the gifted and talented programs taking all honor classes and I maintain an overall GPA of 3.75. In school I’m very active in various clubs such as Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) and Student Government Association (SGA). The past school year I was selected for the position of Student Government Secretary for my school and was inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. I have participated in basketball, Girl Scouts, and T- ball but I have a deep passion for cheerleading. I’ve competed in several cheerleading competitions in numerous states. I feel that my warm smile coupled with my ability to get along with everyone has earned me the distinction of being a social butterfly. However, I don’t take this for granted and I know I’m truly blessed. Even though I have the “Cell” which at anytime can cause my good days to change to bad, it’s by the grace of God and the love of family and friends that helps me hold my head up and take on this challenge. Love and thanks! Kaitlyn) The doctors at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., have recommended a life-saving bone marrow transplant. Kaitlyn Adams unfortunately does not have the medical insurance or money to cover the extremely expensive cost of her much needed medical procedure. That's where you and the Disabled Children's Association comes in. With your support we can help Kaitlyn Adams, receive the life-saving surgery that she so desperately needs. Please find it in your heart to make a donation, to help save the life of this precious child. Also, please be sure to "Send" this information to everyone on Facebook, that you can...
