In June of 2012, my beautiful young wife, Sara, was diagnosed with breast cancer. We have caught it early, and have the insurance necessary to beat it*. However, we need your help to ensure that we can have a family! Next month, Sara will undergo surgery to remove two tumors. She has been diagnosed with infiltrating micropapillary ductal adeno carcinoma. Sara will then be treated with radiation and chemotherapy to reduce the chances of a recurrence. Since the cancer is hormone responsive, she will also be given hormone suppressants for approximately five years. These medical procedures, although life-saving, greatly reduce the chance that we will be able to have children naturally. These odds improve with fertility treatments and egg harvesting which must occur before chemotherapy begins. However, our insurance does not allow for fertility coverage. Although we are not opposed to the idea of adoption, and even acknowledge that it may be necessary during this time, as it will be impossible to conceive during treatment, we still value the idea of being able to conceive naturally, if possible. The fact that it is possible, or even may be possible, makes it something that we are willing to fight for. Please know that we have spent a lot of time deciding as to whether or not to appeal to our friends for help. In the end, we concluded that the future of our family was something worth putting our pride aside for. Ours is a community which does incredible things. I have seen our friends help each other time and time again, and am proud to be a member of such a strong family. Please help if you can, but know that we understand if you cannot. *It should be mentioned that it actually remains unclear how much chemotherapy will be covered by the insurance. It is also currently uncertain how they will decide to handle out-of-network treatment facilities such as the University of Michigan (necessary, as they have more experience handling younger patients such as Sara). Donations will also be used to cover these expenses. I will be periodically adjusting the goal as it is met. I do not want to start too high for fear of dissuading anybody of the impact of their donation. Please know that we are fairly confident that total expenses will exceed donations, but in the event that this is not the case, we intend on donating all excess to an appropriate charity. blog:
