This appeal will finance life changing orthopaedic operations for polio-affected disabled children in the war-torn Eastern Provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. - $500 will cover all the expenses to transform a child's life forever. This includes transporting the beneficiary to Heal Africa Hospital in Goma to receive an operation before being fitted with a custom built orthopaedic brace in the StandProud brace workshop and residential centre in Goma. This is followed by thorough rehabilitation and walking practice at one of the StandProud centres in DRC. Since 1999 over 5,000 vulnerable children and youth suffering the effects of Polio and other mobility limiting disorders in DRC have been given back their mobility and dignity through the dedicated efforts of volunteer members of StandProud's partner the Association Congolaise "Debout et Fier" the staff of which are themselves former beneficiaries of the bracing programme. For more details please visit one of StandProud's websites: http://www.standproud.org/ http://www.standproud.org.uk/ --------------------------------------------------- Responding to the special needs of disabled children is a problem in many developing countries. The situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) is among the worst to be found anywhere. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is Africa’s 4th largest country and is home to over 68 million people. Since 1998, violent conflict, disease and poverty in the DRC have killed over 5 million men, women, and children—more than any war since World War II. Due to the neglect of a self-enriching, despotic leader for most of its post-independence history, the country spent three decades with only minimal polio vaccination practiced. Consequently, DR Congo is one of the few places remaining in the world where wild poliovirus continues to circulate. Though massive internationally funded vaccination campaigns over the last decade have greatly reduced the number of new cases, DR Congo has a disproportionately high number of persons for whom the vaccination campaign has come too late. Those already paralyzed for life unfortunately include many young children and youth.
