Han (Yoonho) KIM

Han (Yoonho) KIM is an amateur sailor from Seoul, South Korea. He is hoping to fulfill his dream of becoming the first Korean sailor to participate in the renowned Clipper Round the World Race in 2015-16. Han has been sailing for about 20 years: first starting as a member of the Yonsei University Sailing Club, then a member of the University of Wisconsin Madison Hoofers Sailing Club, and now he is a member of the 700 Yacht Club in Seoul Korea.

Although Korea has advanced considerably in many sports areas, sailing is still an exceptional sport with little sponsorship from the government or corporations. Han wishes to change this by partaking in an international around-the-world sailing competition as the first amateur Korean sailor, racing shoulder to shoulder with and against many other sailors, and show the people of Korea that anyone can sail, and even sail around the world!

Please help Han KIM become the first Korean to circumnavigate and win the Clipper Round the World Race in 2015-16.

Clipper Round the World

The Clipper Round the World Race (http://clipperroundtheworld.com/) is held every two years and is the longest one-model sailing regatta that covers almost 40,000 nm (74,000 km) for 11 months. The route is divided into 8 legs and 16 races and visits 16 key ports around the world. 14 teams, composed of one professional skipper and 20 or so amateur crew, sail on a 70ft (24m) one-of-a-kind stripped race yacht: Clipper 70. All crew experience being becalmed, battling through 65knot (120km/h) gales, climbing over 10 meter waves, and struggling through stinging rain, snow flurries, sleet, fog, and sticky heat. In addition, they also undergo tremendous self and social discipline living in a confined area with 20+ people. It is one of the hardest and fulfilling challenges one can imagine.

Request

Each crew is self-funded and has to raise about 100,000 USD for fees, insurance, flights, equipment, and training. Han has worked hard and paid about half of this sum but is struggling with the rest. He needs your help. You can help Han sail around the world and win the Clipper Race with donations of any amount.

Pledge

Once complete, Han pledges to use his experiences for:

1. the advancement of sailing in Korea and sailing in general,

2. encourage people to fulfill their dreams,

3. help others raise funds for similar adventures,

and

4. further develop his skills and experiences to be able to contribute to a larger cause.

Thank you very much!
