Dream, Write, Graduate: Safia’s Story

Safia is a 2nd year medical student from Jalalabad, Afghanistan. She is passionate about writing and becoming a doctor for her community. Safia has funded her medical school tuition for the past year by writing and publishing her own books. She participated in the Global Connections and Exchange (Afghan Youth Connect) and graduated from a high school in Afghanistan supported by the La Jolla Golden Triangle Foundation in San Diego. Her father is a teacher and they live in a rural village. They do not have electricity at home and Safia charges her laptop at school to have a few hours to work at home. At times she has written in the dark, waiting for the light of day to correct her work. To help her achieve her dreams Safia writes books and study guides which have been published in Afghanistan and sold at the university and throughout the community.

Our goal is to support Safia in her effort to graduate medical school and also continue publishing her books. Supporting the education of this one woman will have a huge impact on an entire community. Education is a powerful tool, uplifting communities and transforming lives. Help Safia in her quest to educate and be a leader.

Total goal: $3500.

Funding will be used for:

5 year Medical School Program (4 years to complete); books, tuition, transportation

Note: For safety and security reasons, Safia’s full name and further details about her shall be kept private.

A Journey of Support: Walking from Julian to San Diego

In support of Safia and to further female education in Afghanistan we are having a special fundraising walk to raise awareness and kick off our goal for November. It will be a full weekend in support of an important cause. On Saturday, November 1st we will begin the journey. Before dawn we will start in the mountains of Julian and walk through the town of Ramona. On Sunday we shall continue to the top of Mt. Woodson and journey to Lake Poway.  Total distance achieved: 33.5 miles!

Who is participating?

Rotarian and San Diego-Jalalabad Sister Cities Foundation member, Fary Moini, friend of Afghanistan Lila Afshar , & Katie Spencer, San Diego-Jalalabad Sister Cities Foundation member.

How can you participate?

We need your support to help us reach our goal. Join us as a sponsor with a supportive donation as the three of us (Fary, Lila, &Katie)  kick off the fundraising with our Julian walk. We will hike 33.5 miles and your entire donation will go directly to Safia's educational expenses.

The San Diego-Jalalabad Sister Cities Foundation has graciously volunteered to manage the monetary donations and the secure delivery of funds directly to the medical school for Safia’s educational expenses. The San Diego ~ Jalalabad Sister Cities Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization and donations are tax deductible.

The La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club has generously donated a laptop computer to Safia for her to complete school work and write her books. Shipping to Afghanistan is very expensive, logistically difficult, and not secure, thus the best form of further support is through monetary donations. Safia can purchase notebooks and school supplies in Afghanistan.

Safia is currently working on a children’s book that will be a learning tool and dictionary for kids learning English and Pashto. She is also working on a book titled "Safia's Story: An Educational Journey in Afghanistan".
