Sparks and lights illuminate a stage leaving only a silhouette of a curvaceous body. That is just one of the many dramatic images that comes to mind when I hear the word ‘Dance’. Dance is every part of my life. It is the way I express my self, I can become different characters, and even after four hours of rehearsal, I am fatigued, but at the same the same time I feel achieved. The next day all my muscles ache, but I do not mind because I know that I have accomplished something.
I have been dancing just about all my life, but I began learning technique, proper form, and the terminology of dance when I was eight. My dance teachers always say my sisters and I had scowls on our faces when we first came in and had to warm-up and stretch. I can believe that because we had never been in a real dance class having to point our feet or stretch. Those early teachings have truly brought us a long way, and we would not be the dancers we are today without them.
I enjoy dance because of the progress I can actually see. Over the course of nine years, I have matured in not only my dancing, but also my approach and behavior towards class. In my younger days I would sometimes walk in with an attitude and would not want to dance. When we were told to help some of the newcomers with choreography, I would not be the first to help. Now, I take the initiative to help other students without being asked. I actually look forward to going to dance class and I am eager to know what we will be doing that day. My dance experience as a child compared to now is extremely different, and by experience I mean my approach. When I am in class I strive and work my hardest to get better. I work through the pain and and sweat, and at the end it is all worth it because of all the progress I know I will make in the long-run.
I have never been the cocky or arrogant type, but sometimes when I see myself dancing, I can not help but to think ‘Man, I look good’ or ‘Is that me?’. I of course keep these thoughts to myself and I am sure not to boast. But, when I am in my element, I go to another place that is outside myself. While I am dancing it is almost like I have an alter ego, or many of them, depending on the style of dance. In one dance I can be a person that has so much emotion, and in the next, I could be a corky, weird character. On stage I get to channel a character that I am not on an everyday basis.
And with your contribution and support you can make this dream a reality, Thanking you, in advance Aneesah.
