Donna Ellington hasn't added a story.
The Drive for Universal, Single-Payer Healthcare urgently needs your help to fund our informational and petition drive, to educate and advocate for universal, single-payer healthcare. Our 3-week tour to California, Oregon, and Washington in April and early May will provide many participants an opportunity to see The Healthcare Movie, participate in panel discussions, town halls, and social-justice fairs and forums. We need $10,000 to help us drive home the point that Healthcare is a basic human need. Does America need a new healthcare system? DUH!
45 million Americans remain without access to basic healthcare. Even with the ACA, it is estimated that more than 30,000 will die every year until we are finally able to provide truly universal, single-payer healthcare. Won't you help us make a difference? Your money will be used to defray printing costs (posters, brochures, petition), the costs of renting two vehicles and gassing them up for the trip, communications (website, database, Internet, phone), T-shirts and equipment. Other costs associated with the tour will be shared by our core travel group.
We will be traveling with The Healthcare Movie. This film is a tool for advocates to boost awareness and call people to action to create a tax-supported universal medical care system in the U.S.
The Future We Are Creating
Background:
Every developed country in the world except the United States offers a health care system that covers all its residents. Health care in the United States is complicated, expensive, unfair, financially devastating, and deadly for many Americans. Even as the Affordable Care Act goes into effect, it is predicted that 30 million people will still be uninsured, and many more will be under insured.
Other countries have proven that a comprehensive, accessible universal healthcare system costs far less, includes everyone, and has better outcomes. It's time we Americans stop messing around and get this done.
How We Are Creating It
Our venture:
We are taking The Healthcare Movie on the road and traveling with the West Coast tour of the Drive for Universal Healthcare.
Our Story & Why You Should Support Us
Who we are:
Laurie Simons and Terry Sterrenberg are a married couple of mixed cultural heritage. Laurie is Canadian and Terry is American. In making the documentary called The Healthcare Movie (www.healthcaremovie.net) they learned that the story of the battle for national healthcare in both countries has been an adventure story, fraught with heroes and villains. And they learned how two neighboring countries ended up taking such drastically different paths.
Laurie and Terry met DUH Founder Sue Saltmarsh in January, 2012, at a Houston conference for universal healthcare. Sue had started The Drive for Universal Healthcare (DUH) out of her own frustration with the limitations of the U.S. healthcare system (www.duh4all.org).
Others on the tour include Donna Marie Miller Ellington, the on-line media manager for Drive for Universal Healthcare and Americans for Healthcare, Too; Bob and Linda Wickline who provide musical support via Bob's powerful single-payer songs, and Bob Sisler and Doris Wojtala, single-payer advocates from Detroit, Michigan who bring union experience and knowledge to the table. Doris is a dynamo who helps us collect tons of petition signatures!
Why it Matters:
By traveling with DUH and having screenings of the Healthcare Movie throughout the country, we hope to bring national attention to the widescale support for universal healthcare that already exists in the United States.
Thank you, on behalf of the many people who will gain access to healthcare as a result of our efforts. Your family, your friends, your neighbors, and YOU should all have access to the healthcare you need without the barriers of co-pays, out- of-pocket costs, or the threat of medical bankruptcy. Failure is not an option. https://www.facebook.com/DUH4All/info
