I would like to invite you to partner with me in funding a ground-breaking research project: Exploring the Role of Emotional Intelligence in Effective Lead Church Planters.

The search for talented and capable church planters is important today more than ever as research increasingly shows that new churches are reaching new people!   We are familiar with the church planting organizations within our fellowship who effectively utilize assessment and coaching tools to recruit, train, and develop church planters who are equipped to grow the healthiest churches possible.  While several fantastic personality assessments are used among our organizations, I recently became curious about the impact of the lead planter’s Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and its impact on the success of new church plants.

My husband and I have been in church leadership for the past 13 years, and just recently planted a new church in San Diego, CA in 2011. Because I’m a church-planter’s wife and have experienced first-hand the important and often complex set of skills church planters need in order to grow a healthy church, I have chosen this topic as the subject of my Master’s Degree in Organizational Development from Pepperdine University.

This study will explore the role that Emotional Intelligence (EQ) plays in the leadership of church planters in Restoration Movement Churches in the U.S. Utilizing the BarOn EQi 2.0 Emotional Intelligence Assessment, I will look at the relationship between the EQ profiles of lead church planters and healthy church growth patterns, according to attendance and financial data three years after being planted. The primary goal of the study is to discover and describe patterns between the five composite scales of the EQi 2.0 and positive church growth trends. Participants will include 50 lead church planters who have already participated in a previous doctoral study by Dr. Paul Williams (Maximizing the Effectiveness of Lead Church Planters Through the Personal Profile System of DISC Test, 2012). Dr. Williams has given me permission to use his archival data on church attendance and giving per capita as part of this study.   Additionally, I will be including 5 church planters from the acapella churches of Christ.

I would like to ask for your support! The cost for the online EQ assessment, including a full feedback report which will be sent to every church planter for their own continued leadership development, is $55/per planter, including a student research discount. This means the total cost for conducting this research will be $3,025.   I believe the findings from this research will be invaluably helpful, not only to the individual planters who participate, but also to our church planting organizations. My hope is that this study will better inform how we choose, assess, coach, and develop effective church planters in the future! Your financial support for this study is both needed and welcomed.
