Alexandra Ramos hasn't added a story.
Frida is a 6-month-old puppy that we are nursing back to health, after her previous owners’ terrible abuse and neglect.
Although we can cover the costs of food, supplies and grooming, we are trying to raise money to cover her medical costs. Please help us in any way you can—every bit counts.
The Story:
My husband Richard was driving me home one night, when a puppy walked into traffic on NW 7th Street in Miami. The car in front of us swerved to not hit her, but the pup kept walking farther into the street. Not knowing what else to do, Richard stopped the car to block the lane and honked to scare her out of traffic.
After we scared Frida off the road, Richard parked a street over and let me out of the car. I walked up to Frida, but she ran off and wouldn’t let me come close. She wore no tags or collar. I followed her for a while at a distance, but Frida once again walked into the street. We decided we needed to get her away from all traffic before thinking about the next step.
After about twenty minutes of working Frida away from traffic, a woman that had been nearby the whole time finally claimed her and begged us to take her. She said that Frida gets out any chance she gets, and chews a lot, but that Frida is a good dog. I looked over, and noticed that the door to the apartment building was left wide open. The same woman had been outside when Frida ran into traffic, but never called for her. I agreed to pick the dog up another day with my friend Bruna, who could foster Frida.
The next week, Bruna and I picked Frida up; she still had no collar and was given to us with no belongings. The woman verified that Frida had no shots, but was spayed, and then told us that she doesn’t knowif Frida still chews because she keeps her bound up. The owner dragged her into our car, closed the door, and told us to hurry off.
Unlike the playful puppy our car almost ran into the week prior, Frida was lethargic and seemed drugged. She was covered in ticks.
Frida is staying with Bruna, and in the process of being nursed back to full health. We will be posting photos and updates of her progress until she is ready to find her forever home. If you're interested in caring for Frida or know someone who might be, let us know!
Thank you!
Note: Frida has had two vet visits so far, and will need at least one more. The services we are looking for help covering include:
- Physical Exam
- Fecal & Heartworm tests
- Physical & Medical Flea & Tick Removal (first round didn't get rid of all the ticks, so we don't know how many she will need yet)
- Heartworm Preventive
- 2 Rounds of DHPP Vaccines
- Rabies Vaccine
- Bordetella Vaccine
UPDATE (12/31/13):
Bruna has taken Frida to Brazil with her, where she may have found a home. I should have another update in the next few days, but Frida is currently learning Portuguese and soaking up the rays with five other dogs.
UPDATE (1/12/14):
As of January 3, 2014, Frida has her forever home!
Bruna reached out to a retired couple in Brazil who adopted Ruby, another pup that Bruna fostered last year. The couple was eager to meet Frida, so Bruna took Frida to Brazil (where the couple lives) over the holidays with her. Before meeting the couple, Frida had a great time playing with Bruna's family's other dogs and learning Portuguese.
When the couple met Frida and introduced her to Ruby, they were sold! Frida now gets showered with love all day and even gets to play on a farm with Ruby on the weekends--a far cry from her original home in Miami where she was kept chained up all day.
Yay, adoption!
