Dexter is a six year old Pembroke Welsh Corgi who was rescued by Corgi Mom Karen. It was recently discovered that this sweet boy needed to have an unexpected, life-saving operation. Here is Dexter's story in Karen's words:

"When I first met Dexter, I was looking for a "brother" for my rescue Corgi, Katie. Katie is very shy and needs another dog to help her meet and greet people. So once again I checked with local rescue organizations and found Dexter. He is six years old and is a very big red Corgi with one ear up and one ear down and he has a stub of a tail that is constantly busy when meeting people. He is not shy at all and will walk right up and say hello with a big smile on his face. He is such a gentle soul with such a sweet expression that you can't help but love him. He gives love no matter where he goes or who he meets. Everyone that meets him loves him, including all the vets and vet techs at the animal hospital I go to. When I first brought him home he and Katie played all afternoon and even though he is much larger and older than Katie, he was very careful not to be too rough with her.

One of the things he loves to do is find "interesting" places to take a nap. I never know where I will find him. I have found him on chairs, the couch, behind the bed, on the bed with the teddy bears, in my closet under the clothes and in the bathroom. Even though some of these places had never had a Corgi sleeping in or on them, I can't get upset when I find him because he always has a big smile and a twinkle in his eye like he knows he is getting away with something. When I work in the front yard on my roses and flower beds, Dexter is always by the front door watching my every move with a smile on his face. The neighbors laugh when they see him there - he is like the neighborhood "watchdog".

Dexter's thyroid condition was discovered at his first visit with my vet. We decided to do some specific testing to find out the cause of the high levels. The results were not good. Dexter had a malignant mass on the right thyroid and needed to have surgery immediately. This was something I had never planned on. Being on Social Security, I don't have a lot of money but I knew this had to be done. So Dexter had the surgery and is recovering, but the recovery is difficult. He is not adjusting well to going from an extremely high thyroid level down to a very low one. But Katie and I will see him through this adjustment and give him all the support we can until we have our old Dexter back. I don't know why he was given up to a rescue organization but I am glad he was and that we found him. He has become a very important part of our family and we love him very much."

Dexter suddenly needed to have an operation to remove the malignant thyroid tumor, a cost that Karen certainly was not prepared for. CorgiPals has agreed to help with the cost of this life-saving surgery for sweet Dexter. The total, including Fundrazr/PayPal fees came to $2,050. Please share Dexter's story with your friends and family and help if you can!
