Being a child in Burkina Faso is tough. When your parents struggle to put food on the table, basics that we in the UK take for granted, like books for school, are an unattainable luxury. Burkina Faso is the 5th least developed country in the world (Human Development Index) and only 29% of the adult population can read and write (UNICEF). Most schools have few or no textbooks so the majority of children who are lucky enough to go to school won’t have the chance to open a single book.
We are taking part in a UK government scheme called International Citizen Service, facilitated by the UK capacity-building NGO, International Service. We have been placed with a small Burkinabé NGO called Action pour l’Enfance et la Santé au Burkina Faso – Action for Childhood and Health in Burkina Faso (AES/Burkina). AES/Burkina is a charity which provides health, educational and nutritional support to women, young people and children, particularly those suffering from or affected by HIV/AIDS.
At their head office on the outskirts of the capital city, Ouagadougou, there is a community library containing a small number of school books, French and African novels, as well as comics designed to teach children about vital health issues such as HIV/AIDs. The library suffers from a severe lack of resources; its shelves are less than half-full. Despite this, children of all ages come in everyday by themselves to read and re-read the few books that are there.
WHAT DO WE NEED?
For the library to meet the needs of the children and young people who use it, it is vital that we fill the shelves with school textbooks, comics and novels to encourage reading and learning. More educational resources on health issues are also crucial for the prevention and treatment of disease in adolescence and later life.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
To bring the library to life, we need to raise at least £2000. Please give what you can and contribute to the development of a generation of young people who have the potential to lift themselves out of poverty, if the right foundations are in place.
You can help build those foundations.
