See Dawn O (315-525-0723) or Mary K (315-527-5615) for more information Allie, daughter of Rob and Stephe Barone, was diagnosed in September 2011 with a significant Chiari malformation. The lower part of the cerebellum in the brain is squeezed into the opening where the skull meets the spinal cord. On August 1 Allie had a “posterior fossa decompression” surgery at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington DC, followed by 3 additional surgeries due to complications. For her main surgery, doctors removed bone from the back of her head and spine, along with expanding the “dura” - the lining of her brain - giving her cerebellum enough room that it no longer blocks the opening to her spinal column, and relieving the compression in her beautiful little head. Her Chiari Malformation was so severe that the brainstem was also compressed and the cerebellum was pounding into her spinal column so hard each time her heart beat that there was already scar tissue that needed to be removed. She had a bad cerebrospinal fluid leak in the hospital after the initial surgery which resulted in 3 additional surgeries to attempt and finally repair the leak. Allie now has a PICC line for IV antibiotics until the end of the month and a permanent shunt from her brain to her abdomen. The estimated overall recovery time is 5 weeks.
