Special Ability HorseManship
Thank you for helping us in our program to provide recreation, therapy and enjoyment to those with special ability. We really appreciate all your donations so that we can provide this fantastic service to kids and adults with special needs.
We FOUND 3 wonderful horses to add into our program for our Special Ability riders! Our program is growing and we had to make changes to our "herd" of equine teachers. We have been working with riders with special needs for about 20 years. Children are our primary riders and we do have a few adults as well. Finding the right horses truly does make the program work. Because of the unique action of the laterally gaited horses, we looked hard to find horses that were gaited, gentle, and who loved both kids and adults. The smooth 4-beat gait of the gaited horse simulates the walking action of humans and encourages core strength and development.
Introducing our horses:
Taz: a 23 yr. old Paso Fino gelding. He is short, only 13.3 hands, pretty sable brown color and gentle. A great ride for our smaller riders.
Blue is a 14 yr. old Peruvian Paso gelding. He stands about 14.2 hh and is a blue roan. Blue gives his riders a smooth ride and loves kisses and hugs.
Whoopie is 20yr. old Fox trotter mare. She is around 15hh. Whoopie offers a comfortable ride along with a bit more of a challenge for our advanced riders. She is also great for our bigger riders and can also have back riders for those who need them.
These 3 have fit into our program and are really enjoying their new jobs. Upkeep for horses is not cheap, hay, supplements, hoof care, vet care, tack and other expense all add up. We try to keep our costs low, because we know that those with special needs have lots of expenses.
We believe everybody has abilities. Each individual has unique and special abilities. During our horsemanship lessons, we start each person at their own level of ability. For our clients in wheelchairs, grooming and petting the horse is a good start! For those who need back support during their riding time you can provide a "seasoned" rider to ride with them. Many people start with our miniature horses, building up confidence, grooming skills and leading lessons.
Some of the benefits of riding and being with horses are:

enhance cognitive thinking
increase physical fitness
gain better balance
emotional and mental harmony
