From Poverty to Promise in Lamwo

The challenge: In the shadow of a two-decade conflict and amidst the immense strain of hosting over 60,000 refugees in the Palabek Settlement, the girls of Lamwo District embark on a journey fraught with overwhelming obstacles.

Here, poverty rates exceed 75%, crippling family resources and pushing girls into the margins.

Classrooms are bursting at the seams,  with pupil-to-classroom ratios often exceeding 100:1, creating an environment where individual learning is nearly impossible.

The dream of an education is extinguished early: over 40% of girls in the Acholi sub-region are married before 18, and absenteeism is rampant, with studies showing that nearly 60% of rural and refugee girls miss school regularly due to a lack of menstrual hygiene management.

These girls must navigate this path in schools where over 90% lack electricity, meaning they are being prepared for a world that exists in the dark—denied the fundamental light of knowledge and the tools for a modern future. This is the profound challenge our heroes must overcome.
