Kilomba Collective hasn't added a story.
Summary | It's #GivingTuesday and we are calling for you to GIVE RADICALLY to Kilomba Collective and support Black Brazilian immigrant women and girls in the United States. |
Challenge | The United States is home to the largest Brazilian community outside of Brazil. In 2007, the Itamaraty estimated that 1,7 million Brazilians live here and about 14% of them experience poverty. Kilomba Collective is the first collective intentionally committed to centering the perspective and realities of Black Brazilian people, especially Black women and girls in their multiple identities. We do so by developing advocacy, capacity building, and international solidarity strategies on issues around social justice, gender equality, and human rights. In the international scenario, the work we do connects our experiences with other Black women's movements in the African Diaspora. Since our formation in November 2019, we have been working as a volunteer-run collective. We have grown to be known as a collective that is unapologetic in its commitment to gender and racial equity, access to health and education, safety and justice for Black Latinx women immigrants -- communities that have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic economically, socially, emotionally, as many other Afro-descendent migrants from Latin America communities. |
Solution | This is our FIRST-EVER Giving Tuesday! In these past years, we have been organizing, mobilizing, and teaming up with communities of immigrants to ignite political participation on issues such as racial justice, gender equality, and human rights. During this time, we led and collaborated in several actions. We co-hosted an emergency fundraising to support Brazilian immigrants in New York and New Jersey who faced economic and emotional hardship during the first months of the Covid-19 pandemic. The fund provided families with food baskets, sessions of therapy, and Portuguese-language information about public services and job opportunities. We designed and hosted a series of professional workshops aimed at providing our community with resources to advance their careers. We partnered with the Black Coalition for Rights, Anistia Internacional Global Movement and Oxfam Brasil in a fundraising Campaign for Emergency Actions Against Hunger during the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil. We hosted the first in-person gathering of Black Brazilian Women immigrants, which took place in New York, and organized the groundbreaking 1st Black Brazilian Women Intellectuals International Conference, in partnership with Columbia University. |
Long-Term Impact | With your generous donations, we will be able continue to support a diverse and multigenerational community of Black Brazilian Women. We end 2021 focusing on fundraising, so we can sustain and expand the work we have planned for the next year. Here are three programmatic efforts that require immediate financial support. Your contributions will go directly towards these initiatives.
