Amber Montgomery hasn't added a story.
- Hello! My name is Amber Montgomery. I am a brain stem embolism survivor and a breast cancer survivor . I am in a desperate situation. My son is my world. I am struggling to find affordable housing where I live after my divorce. You see, my ex ended up with house after the house was valued incorrectly. My only option, after failed attempts at getting a loan, was to give him the house. The house is paid off.
So, being that I am disabled from the stroke, I was on a list for affordable housing. My son had wanted to split time 50/50 between my ex and I. It did not work out that way. I had been fortunate enough to receive child support and a small amount of disability payment for my son. That all disappeared in a 15 minute court hearing. I now receive a very limited disability income that does not cover rent or leave money for bills. I do not receive alimony or any other benefits.
When I first got divorced, I signed up for low income housing. This was a good option as a less abled, single, divorced mom. The day of the custody re assessment I got a call from the housing authority. My son was no longer a considered part of my residence being that his primary residence on paper was his dad's. I have my son the first, third and fifth Thursday of every month until Monday morning. If there is a holiday I get him all day Monday. Holidays are different depending upon the year.
So despite this I was kicked down to # 34 from #5 on the wait list as my son is no longer considered a resident of my family despite my extended visitation. This means my wait for affordable housing could be years. When I am accepted, it will be a one bedroom.
You may wonder why I hadn't considered this would happen at my son's 18th birthday anyway. The fact is, when you are a part of the community, transitioning is simpler, and I would have been on a one bedroom wait list immediately for after my son left for college, or to be on his own.
My family has been so incredibly supportive during this time, but they are all in different states. This means that without housing, I will be forced to move away from my son to another state or live in a shelter. The town in which I live is small. It does not cater to people who are young and disabled. I could potentially move to a neighboring county.
This is where I am hoping that if not for help with rent, which is what I am very optimistic about, perhaps help with car repairs. My car check engine light has been on months and it is leaking antifreeze. The air conditioning is out. Yes it's a luxury, but I am in Texas and maybe it's part of why my car keeps breaking down . I am not sure what the problem is.
I just got my most recent check and it is for $600.00, as the government took back Medicare from July of this this as well as a fine. Initially i thought it was child support but have since been corrected. So child support with holding is still forth coming. Why this hasn't been sought by my ex is alarming at the least and means I am looking at more problems. I will update as soon as I call the Child support system as it is through the government that it is dispersed.
I am, as always, hopeful in the good nature of people and feel positive that everything will somehow work out.
I continue to be treated for my stroke with visits and medication as well as testing. I am seen every 3 months for both of illnesses. I saw my oncologist today and continue to be in remission although we need to do a bone scan and mammogram as my tumor markers are 47. I struggle every day to cope with lifes stress, but I am so grateful for all the love and care I receive from those around me. I hope that you are able to help me remain close to my son with any donation. It will be greatly appreciated in this urgent time of need. I appreciate you reading this and your kindness. Thank you for helping during this treacherous time. Please check back frequently for updates and I appreciate you sharing my story.
