Hanna Price hasn't added a story.
The formula is pretty simple, folks. The good people of Eastside Boxing task us with raising the dough that keeps their community programming going. In exchange, we get three and a bit months of being taken apart and rebuilt into lean, mean fighting machines, and if we're matched up with a suitable opponent, three rounds of ringtime in front of a live audience at the Commodore Ballroom.
If my first year was a life-changing experience (spoiler alert: YES), then my sophomore effort was life-affirming. 2016 was doing its very best to break me. It was the gym that got me going, and the gym that kept me going. And I'm a full grown person with a pretty great support network. I can take some knocks.
Now, imagine being ten years old and hungry, maybe worried about going home after school, fearful towards anyone you would consider an authority figure. Put yourself in those shoes and consider how you would navigate living in a rough neighbourhood, being bullied, or just trying to find your place in this world. I wouldn't be a kid in 2017 if you straight up paid me. How life-saving would it be to have a safe place, filled with role models, where you could grab a meal and access healthcare, and benefit from all the incredible physical and mental benefits of boxing training? That's what Eastside does, for the most vulnerable young people in our community. And that's why we put those gloves on.
So yes, it's my third go. I have made this ask before. And many of you reading contributed to getting me into that ring in 2015 and 2016. Thank you for indulging this exercise in self-sacrifice, but most of all, thank you for putting that money where it goes to such valuable use. I'm asking, one more time, for your help.
Thanks for reading!
HJP
Founded in 2012, Aprons for Gloves Boxing Association is a non-profit organization focused on providing community outreach through the sport of boxing. Based in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, the organization was developed by a small group of professionals and entrepreneurs who seized an opportunity to re-establish a historic boxing program for at-risk women and youth. The program offers free mentorship and training to individuals who may otherwise not have the resources or support to participate in such activities. The sport of boxing teaches discipline, respect, hard work and self-control. Training results in positive self-esteem, good health and camaraderie for its practitioners.
Restaurant Rumble 2017
Every year bartenders, chefs, dishwaters, servers, baristas and all sorts of individuals from the Gastown community get together to train at the Eastside Boxing Club to fight in Restaurant Rumble.
In order to attend training, each fighter is required to raise $2000 for charity before they can compete at the Rumble.
