Cotopaxi family loses home in fire

A Cotopaxi family lost their home in a fire Wednesday night, leaving them with virtually only the clothes on their backs. Mike Cessnun, his wife, Yvonne, and their children ages 14, 8 and 7 were uninjured in the fire that ignited at about 6:30 p.m. The cause is believed to be from a ceiling/roof sealant that may have gotten too hot from their wood stove. Deer Mountain Fire responded to the fire.

The family did not have insurance on their home, Cessnun said, because he could not find a company to cover their singlewide modular home. The children lost their recent Christmas gifts in the fire. Mike is not employed, and Yvonne is a nursing student and works part time as an LPN.

The Red Cross will pay for a hotel for the family to stay in for up to three days, and then they are not sure where they will stay. They are looking for a trailer to move to their property to live in while they determine how to move forward in obtaining and putting another home on the property.

"My biggest thing is getting my family under a roof," Cessnun said. "I don't care about 'stuff,' I want to get another house for my family."

Monetary donations to go toward a trailer or modular home may be dropped off at the Daily Record office at 701 S. Ninth St. during regular business hours; mailed to Mike Cessnun at 1139 24th Trail, Cotopaxi, CO 81223; or mailed to Minnequa Works Credit Union, 7 Bassick Place, Westcliffe, CO 81252
