Jana Jones hasn't added a story.
Diabetes is generally a diet related disease of the western world.
However, due to the power of advertising and large corporations it is
beginning to have a tragic effect on the traditional people of the
beautiful island Bali in Indonesia.
So…….this is what we’d like to do!
In mid January 2014, a
team of health care professionals will be donating time and energy and
covering their own costs to travel to a small Balinese community of
Nusa Penida. We will offer nutrition and diabetes education and
support through three schools and work closely with the local Balinese
people. While Nusa Penida is a more traditional island and they do
grow some of their own fruits and vegetables, sadly, Diabetes type 2
has begun to take innocent young lives there.
We would love your help with……..
Health care and education
is limited on Nusa Penida Island, but with the help of our team and
the Australian/Indonesian community, our aim is to fund
items that are
needed for education and health monitoring of diabetes for the next 12
months. This will enable regular blood sugar level testing of a
particular age gap, twice yearly, and therefore, with education, will
help monitor and decrease cases of Diabetes Type 2 in children and
adults. 100 glucometer test kits and even more test strips are needed.
If our Indonesian friends receive support in the form of education and
medical resources, then it will empower them towards being mindful of
modern health issues such as Diabetes.
To help this volunteer program become as integrative and
cooperative as possible we’d like to use a protected species of bird,
the ‘Bali Starling’ to act as a mascot in a children’s book that will
be produced and distributed through three schools on Nusa Penida. The
local community and schools on this traditional island have worked
together with a local charitable organization in recent years to
protect this bird from extinction. So, the aim is to use a character
or mascot, which they already relate to. And have some fun with it
too! Some of our own children will be involved in the trip and hope
that they will not only gain new friendships but also be a positive
influence for the local children as we
have worked hard to teach them
well, about nutrition and health.
Diabetes is typically a western disease and in western countries
we are fortunate to have good health care and education. Most of us
know the risks and we live with the consequences. On Nusa Penida
Island in Bali the local people have very limited funds, education and
health care so please consider helping our project and the Bali
Starling bird educate kids in Bali about healthy food choices,
nutrition and most of all diabetes. A donation of $40 will purchase 1
glucometer for blood sugar level testing, which could be used multiple
times over.
We warmly welcome others with experience and passion who would
like to join us with this grassroots project.
We leave for Bali in mid January 2014!
