From March 7th to March 21st, a handful of students in my school are going on an amazing trip to experience Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands and I hope to join. We will have the opportunity to work with children and families in communities in Ecuador and learn about the significant studies Darwin did in the Galapagos Islands. This trip is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and it would be an incredible privilege to attend. I hope to learn from volunteering in four indigenous communities how they deal with their povery by helping each other.

Did You Know?

300,000+ children are working as child laborers in Ecuador

28.6% of Ecuador's popualtion live below the poverty line

25.6% of Ecuador's population suffers from chronic malnutrition

55% of Ecuador's indigenous population lives in povery

"Ecuador is home to the ‘Minga,’ a Kichwa tradition in which members of an entire community come together to work on a project for the benefit of all."

We will be volunteering in the province of Chimborazo, where Free The Children (www.freethechildren.com) are currently building schools and homes for people in need through their Adopt A Village program. Communities in Chimborazo have very limited access to education, clean water, health care services, and a sustainable nutritious food supply. Many children don't attend school, but instead take jobs as child laborers to help support their families. Those who do go to school must walk many miles to get there. Free The Children's objectives are to support the development of the Chimborazo and Amazon people, to provide resources to help these people lift themselves out of poverty, and to learn and strengthen the values of ancesteral and cultural knowledge, traditions, and rituals. I hope to take part in furthering each of these goals and to gain an incredible anthropological experience.
