PROBLEM:

Across the entire world – youth (for this purpose defined as under 30) have been affected the most by the global economic recession.  Sub-Saharan Africa’s population is becoming younger – with youth projected as 75% of the total population by 2015.  Yet according to the World Bank, in countries like Uganda, youth unemployment rate is at a whopping 22.3%, compared to the national unemployment rate of 3.2%.  Those with University degrees have it even worse at 36%. The lack of jobs crisis for Uganda’s educated youth, similar to other countries, will have profound political, economic, and social impacts on development.

According to a 2008 World Bank Report, Uganda
is among the countries with the youngest population and the highest youth unemployment rate of 83%. in the 2011/2012 budget of Uganda, the Minister of Finance
recognised that because of the high levels of unemployment, the Ugandan economy can only absorb
20% of its youth.

Youth “un”-employment therefore poses a serious political, economic and social challenge to the country and its leadership. Its persistence is making it increasingly difficult for Uganda to reduce its
poverty levels.
