My sister-in-law, Whitney, joined Maine Roller Derby in the most recent round of recruits of "fresh muscle" last month on the heels of her spring wedding to my brother Anthony. She developed a passion for the sport while watching and supporting Anthony aka Caesar Foulin' from the sidelines. After completing a session of Derby Lite, Whit was ready to roll. You always know something could happen to you playing a contact sport but you never think that something as extreme as what happened to Whit on October 7th. During a practice, Whit took a fall and immediately knew something was wrong, She couldn't straighten her leg. Not wanting to draw attention to herself she put on a brave face but she needed medical attention. The nurses at practice called an ambulance and after several hours in the emergency room it was discovered that she had badly fractured her hip and needed surgery. After a plate and some screws were inserted into Whit's broken hip she needed to stay in the hospital until Thursday when she could show that she could move around in a limited way. She now has a long road of physical therapy ahead of her and a growing stack of medical bills behind her. She has medical insurance through work but even after her insurance the costs will be a major hinderance to the newlyweds. Whitney and Anthony would never ask for help themselves but I know that they need it and any help anyone could offer would be gratefully accepted.
