ESTANCIA CORAZON, INC. hasn't added a story.
Estancia Corazón, Inc. is a community-based organization founded in 1991, in the city of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. Services are provided to the homeless, marginalized, abandoned and ill persons, particularly to those infected and/or affected by the HIV/AIDS virus that neither possess economical resources nor support to be able to live with the dignity that every human being deserves.
The organization has been characterized by its fundamental base which has been to work with the dignity of each human being who has been provided services since its foundation. Working with a population that the society has marginalized (homeless, drug users, HIV/AIDS, etc.) has enabled us to see and identify possible triggers that lead an individual on a downward spiral to the unknown and losing themselves in a world which later they try to escape from.
The organization’s Mission is to: respond to the duty that each member of the community has of helping to improve the quality of life of the disadvantaged, needy or ill, by giving importance to human dignity, promoting respect and self-sufficiency, and serving as an example, a model of justice, social awareness and compromise.
Estancia Corazón’s personnel are the invisible walls of a building which covers our participants’ miseries and restores in them their dignity.
Our services are provided in Puerto Rico through the following prevention and social welfare projects: “Hogar de Adultos, Fondita Corazón, Programa Educativo” and “ Comunidad Belén”, located in Mayagüez as well as “Plaza Corazón” located in Puerta de Tierra, San Juan, Puerto Rico. The main purpose of our projects is to rescue and provide a better quality of life to our participants.
By the year 2000, Estancia had become the only hope for the above-mentioned population on the western region of the Island; not only was Estancia Corazón their only hope, but as time passed by, a unique and nurturing family was formed. Over 542 HIV/AIDS patients were provided living facilities in Estancia Corazon between the periods of 1991-2012, out of which 262 (48%) died in our care. Approximately 70,000 meals are handed out during a year period to no less than 430 participants. Through our Programs 450 homeless persons have succeeded in acquiring different types of suitable, worthy and secure housing alternatives. Estancia Corazón has been a pillar in the control and prevention of HIV/AIDS among the adult and young population due to its years of experience. Through Fondita Corazón, 2,252 HIV Rapid Tests have been conducted and 13 new cases have been identified and linked to treatment within the past five years (the HIV/AIDS population has been decreasing over the past ten years). All the services that are provided are supported by various funds that the agency receives.
Due to the social problems and the high rate of unemployment actually existing in Puerto Rico, the incidence of homelessness is drastically increasing. The Survey of Homeless People coordinated by the Department of the Family, identified 986 cases in January 2011. Two years later (2013) the “Coalición de Coaliciones Pro Personas sin Hogar de Puerto Rico, Inc.” conducted the “Conteo Boricua” (Puertorican Survey) and reported that the number of persons living on the streets had doubled. The total number has now increased to 1,654 homeless persons identified in 54 municipalities located outside the metropolitan area.
Fifty percent of the homeless persons are at risk of passing away due to the vulnerability of their health conditions and/or innumerable health complications they present, which, in turn, diminishes the quality of their lives. These persons require additional health services which in many instances are extremely expensive due to the complications.
Your help is very important since it will allow us to continue providing food, support services and a secure place for these human beings who are part of our society and are living in the streets.
Join the Estancia Corazón volunteers in order to continue rescuing and restoring lives.
